Women often find themselves discriminated against in the laboratory. The power relation between the two genders becomes even more imbalanced due to some perceived intellectual differences. However, a news report published in the Education Life supplement of the New York Times speaks of how a movement seeking to amend bias and unfairness in science is already sweeping over universities. In contemporary times, it is not so unusual to see the names of women attached to several major discoveries in science. To cite an example, the group of physicists who found a way to stop the light beam was led by Harvard professor, Lene Hau. Likewise, one of the three leaders of the Space Telescope Key Project, which measured the universe’s expansion rate, is a woman named Wendy Freedman.

But there are still doubts as to the success of this effort in altering the male-dominated nature of science. Questions also arise if such a movement champions gender politics or gender justice.

One of the major victories for women advocates in science happened in late January. This was when the top professors and administrators from nine foremost universities, including Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and Stanford, assembled together at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a meeting and symposium on gender equality in engineering and science. The symposium closed with a vague statement which recognises the fact that there are barriers which still exist regarding gender equality in science. The participants of the symposium also pledged to look for ways to work for change.
